We Still

by James Heard

We breath still
as if by breath we might breed
that beautiful face we once stared at charmed
in the mirror. our reflections are still pristine

We laugh still
and if only we could laugh louder and be more bold
if we could let our eyes twinkle when our mouths chuckle
maybe our souls would be churned to movement
by the reckless abandonment we feel in our chins

We lie still
to each other with shielded eyes and wary glances.
even our kisses hold back bitter truths from our hearts
we are betrayed and betrayers with every emotion
we never slide backwards into that cool contented bliss
that was once our hidden and oh so secret joy

We love still
though now love hides behind hate and fury
behind mistrust and abandonment and treason
you and i are twin motions of the same soul
i may never understand you
but in your secrecy I know your heart
wherever you may seek your radiance
remember me
